Mekedatu

As soon as I heard the name "Mekedatu" from my friends, I decided to explore this place. In Kannada (also Telugu) it means "A Goats Leap".

On 14th of june 2008, I decided to hit the road towards Mekedatu along with my family. Its approx. 150kms from bangalore on the kanakapura road. I was a amazing trip and also adventurous. I meant adventurous because you need to cross river cauvery, climb huge rocks to reach this place. This place is a huge rocky gorge from where the river cauvery gushes through. Literally, even a goat can jump from one side to side of the rocks.


Best thing on this trip, was crossing the river with my 4 year old nephew tanmay. He was so excited on seeing the river and started playing in the water and throwing the sand on the people visiting the place. During this period of month, water was about a couple of feet deep. But, its not advisable to visit this place when it is a rainy season and there is heavy water flow in the river.

Once, you cross the river you need to go approx 3kms to reach the stair case point. You can also take a bus to reach this place. From here you need to go down the stair case which are pretty uneven and broken. My mom had a trouble getting down to this place. Here you will find huge rocks in river sand. We relaxed here for few minutes before we decided to climb the rocks to see the mekedatu point.
Once we climbed on this huge rocks we could see the mighty cauvery gushing through the rocks. The strength of the water flow is so huge that it even made very big holes on the rocks.


If you are planning to visit this place take necessary precautions while crossing the river and while reaching this place. Its not advised to cross the river when there is heavy water flow.
